Soap operas were so named because their earliest sponsors were often soap manufacturers. During 1930s and 1940s radio, a top producer of radio soap operas was the married couple, Frank and Anne Hummert. As employees of an advertising agency in charge of producing programs that could sell soap to housewives, the Hummerts pursued a strategy of "reason why" advertising and they perfected an "assembly-line" script writing process that is in common use today on television.
